The Hammer and Quill Story
The Hammer and Quill is a boutique style, licensed tattoo studio in Alstonville, Northern Rivers NSW. 15 minutes from the Ballina-Byron Airport and an hour from Coolangatta Airport and the Gold Coast, Alstonville is centrally located between Byron Bay, Ballina and Lismore.
The Hammer and Quill was established in 2014 by tattoo artist Anthony Alexander. Anthony’s vision was to create a studio with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere where all clients felt welcome, and to provide a collaborative space for artists to create custom tattoo art.
The studio operates by appointment and offers free consultations for new clients and larger scale pieces. Whether it be a small fine line piece or a full sleeve, you will be guaranteed to find the perfect artist to create a work that, not only encompasses your vision, but translates into a well-positioned, quality artwork suited to the tattoo medium.

Meet our Artists
Anthony
Owner Anthony Alexander is a renowned artist in the Northern Rivers drawing clients from interstate. After studying fine arts at University, Anthony began tattooing in 2006. Anthony is a diverse artist and covers all styles. He is passionate about large scale pieces and enjoys the trust built working with clients on these projects. Large scale geometric pieces, colourful neo-traditional with a focus on native Australian flora and fauna as well as Japanese are all styles he enjoys. From black and grey realism to fine line and dot work Anthony has all the bases covered.
Alistar
After completing his apprenticeship in Melbourne, Alistar returned to the Northern Rivers to pursue his passion in tattoo. Alistar has a diverse skillset and covers all styles. Alistar is dedicated to continually refining his craft, working with texture and colours in his pieces. While Alistar has both the skill and passion for any project he enjoys black and grey realism, Japanese and traditional tattoos.
Mitch
With a background in graphic design, Mitch has always been passionate about the art of tattoo. Mitch has refined the style of fine line and dot work tattoos and also enjoys other styles. Much of Mitch’s work is black and grey, however he also works with colour. Mitch's attention to detail is exceptional. From large scale free hand floral work to smaller ornamental designs and neo traditional, Mitch has it covered.
Rachelle
Rachelle is a born creative and has always felt at home painting and drawing. After a career as a pastry chef, Rachelle pursued her passion in tattooing. While Rachelle is happy to take on any creative project she specialises in Traditional and Neo-Traditional projects and enjoys designs with bold colours, solid geometric pieces and dot work. As an animal lover Rachelle loves pet portraits and any projects that honour fur babies. She has a large portfolio of pre drawn designs and enjoys customising clients’ ideas into quality artworks suited to the tattoo medium.
Daniel
Daniel has a background in graffiti/mural art and a long-standing passion for tattoo. Daniel is a diverse artist who tattoos all styles and is passionate about bringing your visions to skin. Influenced by his mentoring in intentional and spiritual practice, Daniel recognises the transformative nature of marking your skin. He enjoys designs that incorporate traditional iconography in a modern context.

Once we have scheduled a booking and received a deposit as confirmation, we'll start working on your customized design.
3. Tattoo Time:
On the day of your appointment, come in and get ready to be tattooed! Our skilled artists will take great care of you and create a personalized masterpiece that you'll love. All you have to do is relax and enjoy the experience!
